A PARENT'S GUIDE

What most children need, by age

A general guide, not advice for your child. Your child's dentist decides what is right for them.

  • Before the first birthday

Brush the first teeth twice a day with a smear of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice, and book a first visit by the first birthday.

  • Ages 1 to 3

The first visit is mostly a look around. We count teeth, check how they are coming in and show you how to brush. Ask us about pacifiers and thumb sucking.

  • Ages 3 to 6

A pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, brushing with a grown-up helping, and checkups as often as the dentist advises. Baby teeth hold the place for adult teeth.

  • Around age 6

The first adult molars come in behind the baby teeth. Ask the dentist whether sealants make sense for them.

  • Loose and lost teeth

Wiggly teeth are normal at this age. Call us if a tooth is knocked out, or if an adult tooth comes in behind a baby tooth that hasn't fallen out.

  • Ages 9 to 12

Sports mouthguards, questions about braces and brushing on their own. We watch how the jaw is growing and refer you to an orthodontist when a child needs one.

WHAT WE DO

Dental Care for Growing Smiles

Routine care for children, explained to them and to you before it begins.

First Visits & Checkups

A visit at your child's pace. The dentist looks at teeth, gums and bite, tells you what they found and answers your questions.

  • Exam of teeth, gums and bite

  • Brushing and flossing coaching

  • Time for parents to ask questions

Cleanings, Fluoride & Sealants

Regular cleanings keep plaque off small teeth. Fluoride and sealants are options the dentist recommends for some children, and explains first.

  • Cleanings

  • Fluoride when recommended

  • Sealants when recommended

Children's X-rays

The dentist takes X-rays only when a picture is needed to see between teeth or under the gums, and tells you why before they are taken.

  • Digital X-rays

  • Only when the dentist decides

  • Explained to you first

WHAT TO EXPECT

A First Visit, Step by Step

Here is what happens when you bring your child in for the first time.

  • 01

    Request a Visit

Use the form or call us. Tell us your child's age and the days that work for you.

  • 02

    A Look Around

Your child sees the room and meets the team before anyone looks at a tooth. You stay with them.

  • 03

    The Checkup

The dentist counts teeth, looks at gums and bite and tells your child what they're doing as they go.

  • 04

    Your Plan

You leave knowing what the dentist found, what comes next and what it will cost, in writing if any treatment is needed.

How fees work

What a visit costs depends on your plan and on what your child needs. Here is how we handle each part, and what you can ask us to put in writing.

  • Insurance we work with

We bill PPO dental plans and file the claim for you. Whether we are in network depends on your plan, so we tell you before your child's visit.

    • PPO and indemnity plans: we file the claim

    • DHMO plans: ask us, they work differently

    • Medicaid and CHIP: ask us, and we will answer yes or no for your plan

  • If you pay yourself

Without insurance you pay the fee for the visit, and we give you that fee in writing before treatment starts. Financing is offered by third-party lenders. Approval and terms are set by the lender.

  • An estimate in advance

We give a written estimate in advance to anyone paying without insurance, and to any parent who asks. It lists the treatment, the visits it takes and what it will cost.

    • Ask when you book or at the visit

    • In writing, before treatment starts

  • Checking your benefits

Before the first visit our front desk checks your child's plan and tells you what the plan says it covers. A plan's estimate is the plan's, so we show you both.

  • What the first visit includes

A first visit for a young child takes about half an hour: a look at teeth and gums, X-rays only if the dentist decides your child needs them, and time to talk. Bring your insurance card, a photo ID and a list of your child's medicines.

    • A look at teeth, gums and bite

    • A written plan if any treatment is needed

    • Time for your questions

An estimate is our written account of what will be billed. Your plan's final payment can differ, and we explain any difference before you pay.
